Italian Serving Platters & Trays
Italian serving platters, oval trays, and statement entertaining pieces — designed in Italy for the way Italians actually serve: family-style, abundantly, in pieces that hold their own on the table. Oval and rectangular platters across porcelain, melamine, and acrylic, plus charcuterie-style boards, decorative trays, and statement serveware.
Each platter belongs to one of Baci Milano's signature collections — Mamma Mia (porcelain + melamine with the iconic hand-painted patterns), Firenze (porcelain with romantic floral motifs), Portofino (Mediterranean blues, made for outdoor lunches), Sagrada Familia (bamboo + brass with Modernist patterns), and the new Joke outdoor pool tableware (BPA-free melamine).
Italian serving platter sizes & uses
The Italian table is built around condivisione — sharing. A typical Italian dinner uses three to four serving platters: one for the antipasto (charcuterie, formaggi, marinated vegetables), one for the primo (pasta or risotto, often served family-style from a wide oval), one for the secondo (the meat or fish course, on a long rectangular platter), and a final piece for fruit, sweets, or the cheese course.
Most Baci Milano platters fall into one of three sizes:
- Small (≈25–30 cm / 10–12") — appetizer or side platters. Mamma Mia's 7-piece appetizer set, the small charcuterie boards.
- Medium (≈35–40 cm / 14–16") — the workhorse. Holds a full pasta course or a wheel of pecorino. Oval shape preferred for family service.
- Large (≈45–55 cm / 18–22") — statement pieces and centerpiece platters. The Portofino oval, the Firenze large round, melamine summer platters for outdoor tables.
Porcelain, melamine, or acrylic — which serving platter to choose
Porcelain is the formal answer. Heavy in the hand, holds heat, and the hand-painted glaze of Mamma Mia and Firenze reads as fine china. Dishwasher-safe (top rack) and microwave-safe. Best for indoor dinners, holidays, and gifting.
Italian-designed melamine is what most Italian families actually reach for in summer. BPA-free, shatter-resistant, mistakable for ceramic at first glance — and it survives pool decks, terraces, and beach houses. Same Mamma Mia and Joke patterns, dishwasher-safe, designed in Italy. Browse the Italian melamine collection for the full lineup.
Acrylic shows up in our cake stands, candy jars, and clear serving pieces — see Baroque & Rock. Crystal-clear, dishwasher-safe, lighter than glass.
What to know before buying
Hand-painted patterns vary slightly piece to piece. That's the point. Each Mamma Mia and Firenze platter is finished by hand at our Italian studio — the leaves, hands, hearts, and pomegranates are not stamps. Two platters of the same pattern will be siblings, not twins.
Stacking and storage. Most Baci Milano platters are designed with flat bases — they stack cleanly with a felt pad or napkin between. Cake stands separate from their domes for compact storage.
Outdoor use. Melamine platters from Joke, Mamma Mia summer, Portofino, and Sagrada Familia are rated for outdoor service and won't shatter on stone or tile. Porcelain platters belong indoors or on covered terraces.
How Italian serving platters get used
The Mamma Mia oval platters are the most-photographed pieces on Italian Instagram — they live in the center of the table, hold a whole pasta course, and disappear from the photo because the food takes over. The Portofino blue platters are the summer staples — they handle grilled vegetables, whole roasted fish, sliced citrus.
The Firenze platters skew formal — they belong at Sunday lunches and on Easter tables. Sagrada Familia bamboo trays move between cocktail hour (with the matching bamboo serving boards) and morning coffee. The Joke melamine line was designed specifically for poolside — pizza nights, summer aperitivo, kids' birthdays without nerves.

Frequently asked questions
What size serving platter do I need for a dinner party of 6?
A medium oval (35–40 cm) is the right size for serving a primo course family-style for 4–6. For 8+ guests, step up to a large oval or use two medium platters in parallel.
Are Baci Milano serving platters dishwasher-safe?
Yes. Porcelain platters are dishwasher-safe on the top rack with normal detergent. Melamine platters are fully dishwasher-safe (top or bottom rack). Avoid abrasive scouring pads on any hand-painted piece.
Can the porcelain platters go in the oven?
No — Baci Milano porcelain platters are designed for serving, not cooking. They are microwave-safe for reheating but not oven-rated. For oven-to-table baking, look for dedicated stoneware.
What's the difference between an Italian serving platter and a charcuterie board?
Serving platters are typically larger, flatter, and ceramic or melamine — built for plated food. Charcuterie boards are usually wood, bamboo, or marble, smaller, and designed for cured meats and cheeses served directly on the surface. We carry both — see the dedicated charcuterie boards collection.
Are these handmade?
Yes — the hand-painted Mamma Mia and Firenze patterns are finished by hand at our Italian studio. Italian-designed luxury tableware, with every piece touched by an Italian artisan.
