Italian Placemats, Table Mats & Tablecloths — Designed in Italy
Italian placemats, table mats, and tablecloths designed in Italy. Antistain cotton from Baci Milano — the same patterns as the porcelain (Mamma Mia, Firenze, Portofino, Joke) translated into the fabric that turns a table into an event. Italian placemats are not paper. They're not disposable. They're part of the set.
Italian placemats — the actual function
In Italian table tradition, the placemat (tovaglietta) is a constant, not a special-occasion item. It anchors the cover — plate, glass, fork, knife — so the table reads as deliberate rather than informal. A Sunday lunch with placemats feels Sunday lunch. The same table without them feels weekday.
Italian placemats are typically cotton, often antistain-treated for the realities of olive oil and tomato sauce, sized 38x38 cm (15x15 inches) for a square place or 30x45 cm for rectangular. They're machine-washable but hand-pressed when possible.
Baci Milano's placemats are antistain cotton, designed in Italy, in six pattern collections that match our porcelain ranges.
Italian table mats — the difference
People use "placemat" and "table mat" almost interchangeably. The slight distinction: "table mat" sometimes implies the larger rectangular runner that goes down the center of the table (not under each plate). In the Baci Milano range:
Placemats (tovaglietta) — individual square or rectangular mats, one per cover, sized for a place setting.
Runners (passatoia) — long fabric strips down the middle of the table.
Tablecloths (tovaglia) — the full table covering.
Italians often layer: tablecloth + runner + placemats, especially for a Sunday lunch or holiday meal.
The six Baci Milano collections
Mamma Mia placemats — six patterns (Tree of Life, Hand, Strawberry, Heart, Flower, Pomegranate) in antistain cotton.
Firenze placemats & tablecloths — the romantic Tuscan-floral line in pink-blush and green palettes.
Portofino tablecloths & runners — Mediterranean blue in antistain cotton, 160x240 cm tablecloth and 48x150 cm runner.
Joke tablecloths & runners — the playful pastel range in antistain cotton, taupe and aqua palettes.
How to use Italian placemats and table mats
Daily dinner. A single placemat at each cover. The table is set in 30 seconds and it reads intentional.

Outdoor entertaining. The antistain cotton holds up to patio dining. Olive oil, red wine, tomato sauce — wash out at 30°C.

Care
Machine wash 30°C with like colors. Antistain treatment is permanent and survives 50+ wash cycles. Tumble dry low or air dry. Iron at cotton setting on the reverse side to preserve pattern. Do not bleach.
FAQ
What size are Italian placemats?
Standard Italian placemat is 38x38 cm (15x15 inches) for the square format. Some are 30x45 cm (12x18 inches) rectangular. Baci Milano's are 38x38 cm square.
Are these placemats washable?
Yes — machine wash at 30°C. The antistain cotton is engineered for repeated washing.
Are they antistain or just decorative?
Antistain cotton — oil, wine, and tomato sauce wash out at 30°C. The treatment is permanent.
What's the difference between a placemat and a table mat?
In American usage, the same thing. In Italian, "placemat" (tovaglietta) is individual; "table mat" sometimes refers to the larger center runner. Baci Milano calls them placemats.
Where are these designed?
Designed in Italy by Baci Milano. The cotton is woven and antistain-treated under Italian design direction.
Do the patterns match the dinnerware?
Yes — the placemats are in the same six patterns as our porcelain and melamine. Set the table fully matched, or mix patterns within the same color palette.
What's the best Italian placemat set for a gift?
The Mamma Mia mixed-pattern set of 6 placemats is the most-gifted configuration. Each placemat is a different pattern — the table reads as a curated set rather than a uniform.
